ADES & GISH COMPANY HISTORY
-
In 1973 Charles (Chuck) Ades was working for Encinitas Floral & Encinitas Propagators and Bill Gish owned Gish's Pacific Flowers. Bill had bought a location on Balour Dr. in Encinitas from Tak Muto and approached Chuck about taking it over as a lease, growing carnations for Gish’s Pacific Flowers. Chuck, not interested in growing cut flowers, suggested converting the houses to accommodate growing houseplants. In April of 1974, Bill agreed to convert the 129,000 sqft. greenhouse and Chuck (with $3,800 and lots of hope and faith) agreed to pay for the production costs, including labor and to pay Bill 10% of the total sales. Ades Floral Farm, soon to be Ades & Gish Nurseries, was born. With the organization changing and growing, in January of 1976, Chuck and Bill agreed to put the two production areas together and “Ades & Gish Nurseries Inc.” was formed. Soon after, in April 1976, they purchased a 55,000 sqft. location in Cardiff under a partnership called “Gish & Ades.” Over the years Ades & Gish Nurseries continued to grow, buying properties in the Cardiff, Encinitas, and Leucadia areas. Soon, Ades & Gish Nurseries had six locations with about 560,000 sqft. under greenhouse structure. After the 80’s, although the company was doing well, both Bill and Chuck decided they would each like to go their separate ways. In November of 1993, Chuck Ades bought out Bill Gish. The company continued to grow after this. In October of 1994, Ades & Gish Nurseries began leasing another location (55,000 sqft.) adjacent to the one in Cardiff. In June of 1996, Darrell Ades joined the company full-time after obtaining a horticultural degree at Cal Poly Pomona. With the company continuing to grow we realized that we couldn’t continue purchasing small properties. In April 1998 Chuck Ades bought a 31-acre location in San Marcos. This location will eventually become the shipping, accounting, production, and sales home for Ades & Gish Nurseries. The new millennium has brought with it many more new changes to our family nursery. In June of 2000 we purchased a 15-acre location in San Marcos on Twin Oaks Valley road. This will allow us to consolidate all of our locations to two sites, which should increase our efficiency, production, and quality. 2000 was also the year that son, Darrell Ades became the General Manager of the nurseries. But one of the biggest changes to Ades & Gish happened in October 2001 Chuck and Joan Ades signed over Ades & Gish Nurseries to Darrell. At Ades & Gish Nurseries we are proud of our history and look forward to a successful future. We realize that for us to be successful, you need to be successful.
